Donald William Johnson, age 57, of Swanton, Ohio, died Thursday morning, July 25, 2019, from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident, on his way to work. He was born June 5, 1962 in Toledo, Ohio to Daniel G. and Matilda A. (Gustwiller) Johnson. Don was a 1980 graduate of Swanton High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy on September 11, 1980. On September 10, 1984, he was honorably discharged and issued the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation and Pistol/Sharpshooter Award. He continued to serve in the Reserves until September 10, 1986. On Valentines Day, February 14, 1987, he married his loving wife, Bonnie Shipman. Together they raised six wonderful children.
Don worked as a Carpenter and was a proud 20-year member of Local Carpenters Union #351. He enjoyed WWE Wrestling, reading Stephen King novels, playing card games, shooting black powder cannons and building bonfires. Most of all, he loved goofing around with his kids and grandkids.
He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 32 years, Bonnie; children, Jeremie (Amanda) Johnson, Ryan (Fiancee Arianna) Johnson, Kyle (Christina) Johnson, Derek Johnson, Phyllis (Ashton) Rettig, Donald William Johnson II; grandchildren, Hannah, Madison, Jacob, Caleb, Lily, Kimberly, Lucas, Ethan and one grandchild on the way. Don is also survived by his parents, Daniel and Matilda Johnson; sisters, Christina (Mike) Stoker, Deborah Orel, Brenda (Glenn) Humberston, Audrey Johnson and Paula Smith; father-in-law, Philip Shipman; brother and sister-in-law, Perry (Brenda) Shipman and Laura O'Niell; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Don was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Phyllis Shipman and brother-in-law, Ken Orel.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Noon) and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Grisier~Weigel Funeral Home, 400 W. Main St. in Delta. A service celebrating Don's life will be held Tuesday, July 30th at 11:00 a.m. in the Funeral Home with Pastor David Rison officiating. The service will conclude with Military Honors conducted by the Fulton County Honor Guard.
