Albert "Al" Zeno Langenderfer

September 23, 1928 — May 26, 2018

Albert "Al" Zeno Langenderfer, age 89, peacefully went to be with his Lord on Saturday morning, May 26, 2018 at Kingston Assisted Living Facility in Sylvania. He was born September 23, 1928 in Swanton, Ohio to Maurice and Loretta Langenderfer.  He attended Immaculate Conception School, and was a 1946 graduate of Swanton High School.  He excelled in all sports and was inducted into the SHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

On August 27, 1949, he married the love of his life, Mary Jeanette Myers.  In addition to being a part time farmer, Al worked at the Hilfinger Corporation, Toledo Steel Tube, and retired from the Dura/Adrian Corporation.  Al was a lifetime member of the Catholic Knights of Ohio and faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Assumption.

Al was an all around sports enthusiast.  He remained an avid Notre Dame Football fan throughout his life (GO IRISH), as well as a devoted Cleveland Indians fan.  He bowled in Men's and Ma & Pa bowling leagues in Swanton.  He also played men's softball and went on to coach girl's softball teams for over 30 years.  Golf was another hobby both he and his wife shared for many years.

Easter was always a "special time" at grandpa and grandma's house.  It was the annual egg (golf ball) hunt.  Al and Mary would hit numerous colored golf balls into the farm fields.  The happy little grandchildren ran out into the fields to retrieve the balls and collect their rewards.

Sunday afternoons were also special, as Al loved to barbecue chicken for his family, whom he dearly treasured.  Throughout his life, and up to the very end, Al enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre and Pinochle.

Al will be remembered as an extremely complimentary, loving and very affectionate man to his family and friends.  He was a popular, gregarious, and overall genuine people person, always greeting you with a warm smile and firm handshake or hug.

Besides his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary Jeanette, Al is survived by his devoted children, Teresa (Tony) Bettinger of Swanton, OH, Joan (David) Miller of Wolcottville, IN, Gary (Pam) Langenderfer of Swanton, OH, Carol (Darrel) Ott of Berkey, OH, John (Deb) Langenderfer of Lyons, OH, Marie (Bruce) Truckor of Swanton, OH and Linda (Todd) Hoyt of Maumee, OH; 22 special grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; brother, John (Anne) Langenderfer; sisters-in-law, Mariarlene  and Verna Langenderfer; brother-in-law, Donald Fritsch; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Jennifer Bettinger; sisters, Rita, Sr. Teresa Langenderfer SND and Jane Fritsch; brothers, Joseph, Gordon and Daniel Langenderfer.

Family and friends may visit Thursday, May 31st from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton, where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m.  Prayers will begin in the funeral home on Friday, June 1st at 10:30 a.m., and follow with a Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption.  Fr. Michael Dandurand will preside.  Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

A special thank you to the staff at Kingston and nurses of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, especially Ann, for all of their wonderful and compassionate care.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2649 US 20, Swanton, OH 43558 or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
