Bertram T. Riches, Jr.

Bertram T. Riches, Jr., affectionately known as Bert, age 92, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, September 14th, 2022 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. He was born October, 23, 1929 in Wauseon, Ohio to Bertram T., Sr. and Florence E. (Meller) Riches. Bert graduated from Wauseon High School in 1947, and on January 14, 1951, he married the love of his life, Joan Sharman.

Bert worked for Gulf Oil in sales for 18 years, and retired as custodian from Swanton Local Schools. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Swanton for many years. An avid sports fan, Bert enjoyed going to ball games, rooting on the Swanton Bulldogs, and watching his grandkids play at sporting events. Bert thoroughly enjoyed being with his family and was very proud of all their accomplishments. He selflessly dedicated himself to them and his community.

Bert will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 71 years, Joan; children, Marta (Timothy) Sheehan, Teri Davis, Scott (Gail) Riches and Amy (Chris) Vaccaro; 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Lee (Karen) Riches; brother-in-law, Richard (Diane) Sharman; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents; son, Thomas Riches; son-in-law, Michael Davis; and his sisters, Mary Anita Clair and Norma Elton.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 16th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton. Visitation will resume Saturday, September 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 N. Main St., where funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Justin McCall officiating. Interment will follow at Wauseon Union Cemetery.
