Claud Churchill Woodring

Claud Churchill Woodring, affectionatley known as Gus, age 91, of Metamora, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home, Tuesday morning, May 17, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 13, 1924 in Berkey, Ohio to Fay Elmer and Mary Elizabeth (Churchill) Woodring. Claud proudly served in the United States Army during WWII and was recipient of the Purple Heart. On October 1, 1949, he married his beloved wife, Joyce Sporleder, and she preceded him in death in 2001.

Claud was a self-employed owner/operator of Woodring Chevrolet in Metamora for many years, retiring in 1990. He was very active in the community serving as village councilman and as a volunteer fireman on the Metamora-Amboy Fire Department for 50 years, holding the rank of Fire Chief for 15 years. He was also a member of the Metamora United Methodist Church, Lyons VFW Post # 7574, the DAV, and was a Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader.

Claud is survived by his children, Richard (Betsy Jo) Woodring, Joseph (Sue) Woodring, Karen (Rick) Meiring, Lisa (Joe) Creque and Todd (Anna) Woodring; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and sister, Harriett Loar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce; brother, Cleon.

Claud's family extends a heartfelt thank you to his hospice nurse, Colleen, for the wonderful compassionate care she provided him in the final weeks of his life.

Claud's body will lie in state at the Metamora-Amboy Fire Hall on Friday, May 27, 2016, where visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. A Last Alarm Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held in the fire hall on Saturday, May 28th at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Tyler Kleeberger officiating. Military Rites will immediately follow the service and interment at Amboy Township Cemetery will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Meals-on-Wheels, or Metamora-Amboy Fire Department.

Visitation: Friday, May 27th from 2 to 8 pm at the Metamora-Amboy Fire Hall

Funeral Service: Saturday, May 28th at 11:00 am

Private Interment: Amboy Township Cemetery
