Donna Marie Gearig

Donna Marie Gearig, age 97, of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal rest, Friday morning, September 1, 2023 at Fulton Manor in Wauseon. She was born February 18, 1926 in Assumption, Ohio to Frank Charles and Florence (Mossing) Simon.  She was a 1944 graduate of Metamora High School and married Earl Gearig on May 10, 1947.  Earl preceded her in death on June 23, 1999.  

Donna worked as a court clerk for Eastern District Courthouse for 20 years. A devout Catholic, Donna attended St. Richard Catholic Parish in Swanton and was a member of the Altar-Rosary Society.  She prayed the Rosary daily. Donna was an avid golfer and was a life member of Valleywood Golf Club.  She was also a member of the Catholic Order of Forresters and Swanton Elks.

Donna is survived by her daughter, Linda (Rick) Salisbury; sons, Wayne (Leslie) Gearig and Mark Gearig; grandchildren, Stacy (Rick) Brummet, Carrie (Nathan) Bretz, Stephanie Buesking, Hope (Jason) Modlin, Holly (Andy) Walker and Scott (Jamie) Gearig; great-grandchildren, Michael (Jordan) Bretz, Kaleb and Devin Modlin, Madeline, Drew and Lucas Walker and Brayden Gearig; and great-great-grandson, Bexley Bretz; as well as many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

Besides her beloved husband, Earl, Donna was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Beth Puder; sisters, Ihla, Wilma and Edna Simon, Norma McGhee and infant sister, Elizabeth; brother, Malcolm “Mac” Simon; in-laws, Troas and Omer Gearig; brothers-in-law, Orville, Lawrence and Edwin Gearig; sisters-in-law, Violet, Virginia and Helen Gearig and Jean Simon; and brother-in-law, Thomas McGhee.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 5th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.. Visitation will continue Wednesday, September 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Eric Culler presiding. Interment will follow at St. Richard’s Cemetery.
