Dorothy I. Gillen

Dorothy I. Gillen, age 93, of Metamora, Ohio, entered peacefully into eternal life Monday morning, June 15, 2015, at the Swanton Health Care and Retirement Center. She was born May 29, 1922 in Delta, Ohio to Roy and Viola (Allen) Casler. On February 15, 1947 she married Maynard “Shorty” Gillen and he preceded her in death on July 3, 2001 after 54 years of marriage.

Dorothy was a homemaker, dedicating her life to raising her family; and remembered as a quiet, gentle woman who always greeted you with a smile. She was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish at Assumption and a life member of its Altar-Rosary Society.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Daniel Gillen (Roger Smith), Randal Gillen, Peggy Shaffer, Ken (Jan) Gillen, and Gary (Lisa) Gillen; son-in-law, Charlie Tomanicek; grandchildren, Sarah (Adam) Foltz, Holly Hassen, Joel (Nicole) Hassen, Don Hassen, Ryan (Mardelle) Shaffer, Harmony (Chris) Sockman, Jacinda (Rob) Sayers, Shaun (Tyrah) Gillen, and Lydia and Grace Gillen; great-grandchildren, Emma, Parker and Grady Foltz, Gabrielle Hassen, Ryzek and Jaxon Shaffer, Schaefer and Quinn Sockman, Ashton, Levi, and Blake Sayers, and Brayden Gillen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maynard; son, Larry Gillen; daughter, Sally Hassen; infant twin sons; brothers, Charles “Buster” and Robert Casler; and sisters, Florence and Helen Casler.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 18th from 2 to 8 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home on Friday, June 19th at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption, with Fr. Michael Dandurand presiding. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Dorothy’s wishes were to donate to charities that support the poor and needy or Swanton Health Care Music and Memories Program in support of alzheimer’s and dementia.

Visitation: Thursday, June 18th from 2 to 8 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora

Mass of Resurrection: Friday, June 19th at 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Assumption

Interment: St. Mary's Cemetery
