Harold A. “Hap” Mapes, age 92, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008 at Harborside Healthcare in Swanton. He was born December 29, 1915 in Toledo, Ohio to Alfred and Gladys (Ballard) Mapes. On June 30, 1938, he married Lottie Fabik.

In his early years, Hap was a farmer who plowed with horses. He also raised pigs and cows. He worked on the Railroad as well as Electric Auto-Lite in Toledo, Valve Gear in Swanton and retired in 1977 from the Pilliod Cabinet Company.

Hap was a member of the Swanton Alliance Church. He enjoyed woodworking (making toy cars), walking for miles and miles and loved to talk and tell interesting stories. Since he was a small boy, he enjoyed tatting doilies, which he learned from his grandmother.

Hap is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Lottie; children, Joyce (Loren) Wiles of Whitehouse, OH, Terry (Linda) Mapes of Ashland, OH, Jane Greco of Medina, OH and Linda (Phil) Box of Brooklyn Park, MN; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren and sister, Phyllis Ross of Whitehouse, OH.

Hap was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Danny Roy; sisters, Lela Clark, Mildred Wise, Helen Whitaker and Hazel Baus and brother, Lloyd Mapes.

Friends and family may visit Friday, March 7th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 8th at 11:00 a.m. at the Swanton Alliance Church with Pastor Andrew Brake officiating. Interment will follow at East Swanton Cemetery.
