Interment with Military Rites: Swanton Cemetery
John Junior Young, age 86, of Swanton, Ohio, passed away Saturday morning, December 30, 2017, surrounded by his family, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. John was born October 24, 1931 in Tecumseh, Michigan to Ethel Mae (Allison) and John James Young. He was a 1950 graduate of Tecumseh High School. Following graduation he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Korean War. On October 30, 1954, John married his beloved wife, Shirley Bellner.
John worked as an auto mechanic and was a member of the Swanton Church of the Nazarene. He served 50 years with the Boy Scouts receiving several leader scouting awards, including the Silver Beaver award. John also served as Head Scout Master for over 5 years and Camp Master at Camp Miakonda. John was a proud 50-year member of the Swanton American Legion Post #479, serving as Past Commander from 1972-1973, as well as serving on the Honor Guard funeral detail team. It was an honor for him to respectfully fold and present the flag to fellow members loved ones. John took great pride as a member of the United Veterans Association. Since 1979, he took charge of the annual bean soup dinner served at the Fulton County Fair. He would spend days in the kitchen cutting up vegetables used in making his specialty soup. John was a great cook and also loved cooking for stag parties and wild game dinners held at the Legion Hall.
John will be missed by his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley, daughter, Cheryl Young; sons, Kevin (Judy) Young and Steven Young; grandchildren, Ian (Krista) Young, Alexa Young, Mitchell Young, Allison Young, Kali Young and Seth Young; brother, Herbert (JoAnn) Young; sister, Katherine Cooper; sisters-in-law, Connie Young and Marjorie Preston; as well as several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ethel; and siblings, Wanda, Merlin, Loretta and James.
Family and friends may visit Friday, January 5th from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Swanton Church of the Nazarene, 315 W. Airport Hwy. in Swanton, where an American Legion Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 6th at 10:30 a.m. at the Swanton Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Harold Ratliffe officiating. Interment with Military Rites will follow at Swanton Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop 208, Ohio Living Home Health & Hospice, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
