Joseph Franklin Cox

Joseph Franklin Cox, age 15, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Tuesday evening, July 17, 2018, at the University of Michigan Children's Hospital, following recent heart surgery.  He fought until the very end.  He would have been a freshman at Bowser High School, where he planned to play basketball.  Joey was born January 21, 2003 in Maumee, Ohio to Hope (Bechstein) and David Franklin Cox, Jr.  Joey wanted to make his family happy and was always looking out for the well being of others.

A typical 15 year old, Joey loved riding his bike, watching YouTube, and listening to his favorite music wearing his earbuds. Joey loved playing basketball and was a Golden State Warrior Basketball fan, and after graduation planned on a career working as a mechanic. He idolized his big brother, David.

Joey was very much loved by his family and will be remembered for his big spirit and will be greatly missed by his mother, Hope; special brother, David (fiancee and sister Shantae); grandparents, Karen and Randy Wilson and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Joey was preceded in death by his father, David, and his great grandma Mary Bettinger.

Visitation will be held Sunday, July 22nd from 12:00 (Noon) until 2:00 pm at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut Street in Swanton (419.826.2631), where funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Donna Stutzman officiating. Interment will follow at Winameg Cemetery in Delta.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Ive known Joseph since he was in fourth grade through Imagine Clay. I remember this real young boy who just seemed to be having a bad day. I had come to find out his father had recently passed away. I remember thinking how unfair it was that this little boy was going through this. Here I am today thinking how unfair it is that his family has to go through this now with him, and how honored I was to have know him the last 5 years.

Joseph has been a student of mine since he was in 5th grade. He was always so sweet and I enjoyed our conversations. He will be greatly missed.
