Louise Ione Smith

December 13, 1928 — May 29, 2015

Louise Ione Smith, age 86, life-long resident of Lyons, Ohio, entered into eternal life on Friday, May 29, 2015 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania, surrounded by her loving family. She was born December 13, 1928 in Delta, Ohio to Clare and Dortha (Shumaker) Rowland. She graduated Valedictorian of her 1946 Senior Class of Lyons School. In 1948 she married her beloved husband, Robert Smith. He preceded her in death in 1993.

In her early years, Louise worked for the Adrian Telegram. Later, she worked as a florist for Burkett Greenhouse, and then as owner and operator of Smith Flower Shop for several years. She retired in 1997 from the US Postal Service, where she worked as a postal clerk and rural mail carrier.

Louise was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Parish in Lyons until it closed in 2003. Since then, she has been a member of St. Caspar Catholic Parish in Wauseon. She was a member of the Lyons Historical Society, Lyons VFW Ladies Auxiliary, loved volunteering at the Fulton County Health Center following her retirement, and was one of the founding members of the Annual Lyons Chicken BBQ.

Louise enjoyed crocheting afghans for family, was well known for her delicious peanut butter pies, and was an avid Detroit Tigers, Pistons and OSU fan. Most of all, she loved her family – she loved spending time with them and never missed a sporting event, birthday, or a day in the sun by the pool.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Bill (Phyllis) Smith, Patty Slagle, Connie (Mitch) Smith-Warner, and Debbie (Kenny) Hudik; son-in-law, Gary Valentine; grandchildren, Mark Smith, Casey (Jessica) Smith, Ryndie (Chad) Bzovi, Aaron (Kelly) Valentine, Trisha (Tyson) Langenderfer, Brian (Jasmine) Slagle, Beth (Sage) Saliba, Angie (Chad) Patterson, Ashley (Josh) Mohr, Dustin (Melissa) Hudik, Nikki (Marc) Brubaker, and Katie Hudik; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Jessica, Claire, Collin, Carter, Morgan, Gary, Maggie, Marie, Tripp, Vaughn, Cy, Gavin, Hadley, Adalynn, Alivia, Dylan, Brandon, Logan, Ava, Emma, Jace, Ryder, Nolan, Marlee, Presley, Griffen, and Peyton; and sisters, Helen Peebles, Joan Bauer, Jeanette Fleck, and Kathy Damiano.

Besides her husband, Robert, Louise was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Cindy; and sister, Wilma Hinkle.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 3rd from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Pope John XXIII Room at St. Caspar Catholic Church in Wauseon, where the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be held Thursday, June 4th at 10:30 a.m. in the church with Fr.
