On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Matt C. Gongwer, age 46, passed away from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome at Providence Hospital, Mobile, AL, surrounded by his loving family. Matt was born March 06, 1971 in Toledo, Ohio, to Gennie (Worona) Gongwer and Greg Gongwer. Matt attended St. Richards, Swanton, and St Francis De Sales High School '89, where he played football his freshman year being part of an undefeated season. Matt was forced to quit sports due to a serious knee injury. He also attended the University of Toledo. He moved to the Mobile area where he has resided for the last 22 years, and he considered this his home.
Matt was employed by Window World of Alabama as a sales associate, and was recently awarded "Salesman of the Year". He was previously the owner of MGR Remodeling and an all around handy man. Matt was an avid pool player, loved NASCAR, and the University Of Alabama "Roll Tide". He enjoyed spending time with his many friends. He had a good heart and was always looking out for his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his loving son, Matthew G. (Matt) Gongwer of LA; his loving mother and best friend, Gennie (Worona) Gongwer of Swanton, OH; father, Greg Gongwer of Southgate, MI; his brother whom he was so proud of, Andrew (Nicole) of Lafayette, IN; sister, Rachel Brunner (Dan), love of his life, Beth Cones of AL; special cousin, Chuck McGraw; special Uncle, to Ethan & Bryce McManaman of OH and their father, Shawn; and Madilynn & Gehrig Gongwer of IN; and stepchildren, Chelsea and Michael Taylor of AL.
Matt was preceded in death by his loving grandparents, Joseph and Genevieve (Michalski) Worona, Warren and Rita (Lyskawa) Gongwer; his special great grandma "L", Bertha (Krall) Lyskawa; and special aunts, Mary Ann Mahaney and Dolores McGraw.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held Saturday, April 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at St. Richard Catholic Church, 333 Brookside Dr. in Swanton, with Father Daniel J. Zak presiding. Family and friends may visit Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow in the St. Richard Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an Education Fund setup for his son, Matt, in care of Key Bank, 115 E. Airport Hwy., Swanton, OH 43558.
