Melvin Romaine Lumbrezer, age 78, of Swanton, Ohio, entered into eternal rest Thursday morning, December 13, 2007 in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 1, 1929 in Swanton, Ohio to Clarence and Martha (Hassen) Lumbrezer. On February 14, 1953, he married Mary Loch.

Mel worked as a mason and enjoyed farming his land. He also was caretaker of Marygrove Cemetery since 1967. Mel opened graves for deceased parishioners using only a shovel. His son, Alan, has taken over the responsibility.

Mel was a life-long member of Immaculate Conception at Marygrove and present member of St. Richard’s Parish. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Laborer’s Union Local 500 and the Toledo Farmer’s Market. He enjoyed going to the market every Saturday and gardening.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Mary; son, Alan (Jane) Lumbrezer of Swanton, OH; daughter, Shirley (Bill) Zaremba of Parma, OH; 6 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Tom (Marge) Lumbrezer and sister, Irene Warniment.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Roxanne Ramey, and brothers, Sylvester “Jack” Lumbrezer and Joseph Lumbrezer.

Friends and family may visit Monday, December 17th from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Swanton, where a Scripture service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Prayers will begin Tuesday morning, December 18th, at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Conception at Marygrove on Raab Road at 10:30 a.m. Fr. Dennis Metzger and Fr. Daniel Zak will officiate. Interment will follow at Marygrove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
