Romain “Doc” Hassen, age 88, of Blissfield, Michigan, entered into eternal rest Friday evening, February 29, 2008 at Swanton Health Care and Retirement Center. He was born December 27, 1919 in Swanton, Ohio to Harvey J. and Mary Katherine (Bick) Hassen. On November 4, 1944, he married Alice Ann Snyder. She preceded him in death on May 16, 2005. Also preceding him in death were his parents and brother, Joseph Frederick Hassen.

In the 1950’s, Doc owned and operated Doc’s Tavern in Metamora. He retired from the Dana Corporation in 1980; however, his true passion was farming. He farmed all his life. He will be remembered for his delicious white sweet corn, which he provided to the local grocers to distribute.

Doc was a 25-year member of the Metamora-Amboy Twp. Fire Department, life-member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Assumption and social member of Catholic War Veterans Post #306. Doc enjoyed many fun-filled years with family and friends at the family cottage on Sand Lake.

He is survived by his daughter, Becky Bauerschmidt of Sylvania, OH and son, Michael J. Hassen of Shelby Twp., MI; grandchildren, Shawn Hassen and Justin Merillat; sister, Helen Hassen-Murnane of Columbus, OH; brother, Harold (Lillian) Hassen of Waterville, OH and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and family may visit Tuesday, March 4th from 2 - 4:30 and 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora, where a Fireman’s service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5th, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Assumption. Fr. Dennis Metzger and Fr. Frederick Snyder will officiate. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Metamora-Amboy Twp. Fire Dept. or Holy Trinity Building Fund.
